Leadership Reaction Course

The cadets of the leadership 2 Course completed their class project that included building a balance board obstacle at Hargrave’s Leadership Reaction Course. The entire project was planned, resourced, budgeted, and built by Cadets Nathan Higdon and Andrew Ponton. The new obstacle is designed to test teamwork, effective communication, and attention to detail to complete the objective of balancing 2 teams on either side of the platform. Assisted by Cadet Jay Thompson and Katherine Dooley, the small construction crew built the obstacle in just 3 hours.

The Leadership 2 Course is a semester-long college preparatory course that integrates character education and builds on the foundations of leadership that were learned in the Leadership 1 Course. The outcome of the course is to provide students with the advanced knowledge, skills, attributes, and behaviors necessary to assume leadership roles in their communities, business, and the armed forces. Each semester the students of the Leadership 2 Course complete a project that is enduring and benefits the Hargrave community. The balance board obstacle is the 4th obstacle built by the cadets of the Leadership 2 Course extending back to 2016. --Scott R. Dooley Director, Center for Leadership and Ethics

On 8 December 2020 Cadet Master Sergeant Zinke was recognized with the General Colin Powell Leadership Medal for his efforts as an exceptional leader at Hargrave Military Academy. The General Colin Powell Leadership Medal was established to recognize Hargrave cadets who demonstrate achievement within the Hargrave’s Military Department and the 4 Pillars of Academics, Athletics and Fitness, Character Development, and Spiritual Growth. In addition, the medal represents a commitment to the Hargrave Leadership and Character Development Program as prescribed by Hargrave’s honor code, policies, regulations, and as administered by the Director, Center for Leadership and Ethics.

The opportunity to earn the prestigious General Colin Powell Leadership Medal is available to all Hargrave cadets who meet the rigorous requirements, to include favorable completion of the Leadership 1 Course, and having successfully served in a leadership position within the corps of cadets for 1 year.

Master Sergeant Zinke was recognized for demonstrating great skill completing the Hargrave Military Academy Leadership 1 Course and the Leadership 2 Course, and for performing honorably as a Cadet Master Sergeant and the Bravo Company First Sergeant where he received two military performance awards. During his tenure at Hargrave Master Sergeant Zinke went above and beyond and completed the rigorous Eye of the Tiger Competition, served on the Honor Council, and on the Hargrave Color Guard. Swim Meet Recap - 1/20/21

This meet was an opportunity to try some things out, and some things worked and some things did not. There were more DQ's than was necessary and we dropped some valuable points on some basic mistakes. But it is early in the season and with the majority being new, it is to be expected. "Mistakes are proof that you are trying."

In alphabetical order, I'd like to recognize the following:
Adkins, Bryce ('23). Bryce dropped 0.30 seconds off his 50 freestyle.
Bonan, Logan ('23). Logan dropped 2 seconds on his 50 freestyle and 2 seconds off his 100 breaststroke
Crisp, Gage ('21`). Gage set a personal best in the 200 IM
deVeer, Nick ('21). Nick swam a personal best in the 50 freestyle.
Dixon, Malachi ('24). Malachi dropped 2.4 seconds on his 50 freestyle.
Duff, Nathaniel ('23 ). Nathaniel completed in his first swim meet and dug deep to finish strong.
Gregori, Ben ('21). Ben posted his fastest ever 50 freestyle by 0.01 seconds! And less than 1 second off qualifying for State.
Higdon, Nathan ('21). Nathan qualified for State in the 200 freestyle and the 50 freestyle, taking his total to 4 individual events.
Kidd, Tommy ('22). Tommy dropped further time in his 50 freestyle.
Mesidor, Dimitri ('24). Dimitri competed in his first swim meet and worked hard in his events.
Ratchford, John ('22). John helped the team by swimming his first 200 freestyle in competition! He did an amazing job and only complained before, during and after! But I'm proud he started and finished it! Plus he dropped 2.5 seconds on his backstroke!
Teluk, Ethan ('22). Ethan set a personal best in the 100 freestyle by 11 seconds!
Thompson, Jay ('21). Jay set a personal best in the 100 freestyle and he did an awesome job of leading his teammates in the 100 backstroke.

So with these outstanding performances,  your Hargrave Swim Team beat North Cross 51-25!

Varsity Basketball Recap - 1/20/21

The Hargrave Tigers took the short trip up 29 North to take on the Bishops of Virginia Episcopal School for a midweek matchup. Hargrave and Virginia Episcopal have a storied history of intense, hard fought, competitive matchups, particularly over the past few years as Virginia Episcopal eliminated the Tigers twice in the VISAA Elite Eight (2017 and 2019) by a combined four points. But the Tigers got their revenge late last season in a thrilling 76-70 victory at Virginia Episcopal to secure the #2 overall seed in the VIC Conference Tournament and clinch a spot in the top eight for the VISAA State Tournament.

Fast forward almost 11 months and both teams found a way to prevail through the pandemic to provide an outstanding basketball game in an empty gym where all that could be heard was communication, shoes squeaking, and the sweet sound of the basketball swishing through the net. Virginia Episcopal got off to a hot start as they poured in 63 first half points and the Tigers found themselves trailing 63-35 at the break. Head Coach Alan Petty noted, "The offensive firepower was on full display tonight. After scoring 39 points in our last game to scoring 35 in the first half tonight is a huge improvement. We were sharing the ball and taking full advantage of our open looks as a team."

The second half mirrored the first half, as Virginia Episcopal increased their halftime margin early in the third quarter. However, senior leader, Collin Himmelberg (Chapel Hill, NC) put the team on his back and started to really propel the Tigers offensively in the second half. Himmelberg poured in 29 of the Tigers' last 31 points en route to a career high 44 points. Ultimately, the Tigers were defeated 112-77 but showed some promise despite the losing effort. "We took some strides forward tonight. Still need to clean some things up defensively but if we continue to build and stay connected then we will continue to make progress," remarked Petty. "Quick turnaround to this weekend but I have a feeling our guys will be all juiced up for a pair of rivalry games!"

Notable Performances Included:
Collin Himmelberg '21--44 points
Keegan Barnhart '21--10 points
Nick Hammock '22--9 points
CJ Farmer '22--8 points
