Hanging of the Greens Invitation
All in the community are welcome to join the Hargrave family at the Hanging of the Greens in the Cheatham Chapel on our historic campus on Sunday, Dec 8 at 6-7pm.
The Hanging of the Greens service is one of the main events highlighting the Faith pillar of Hargrave Military Academy. At the service, we celebrate the nativity of Jesus with the recognition that He is the Messiah, born at Christmas so that He might die to secure humanity’s salvation. Without Christ’s birth, there would be no hope for our faith. Therefore, we observe the Advent season with hopeful expectation of Christ’s promises
Music will be provided by the Hargrave and Chatham Hall choirs, the Hargrave Band, and the Hargrave Highlanders. Our fine young men will also perform Christmas Hymns and give readings.
Calendar of Events
On a chilly Sunday morning, a service-minded group of Hargrave cadets rose early to rake the fallen leaves around campus. The cadets were able to rake up 23 industrial-sized garbage bags full of leaves. To some, raking leaves may seem like a tedious chore, but to Hargrave cadets, service at Hargrave is a way to build bonds and take pride in our historic campus. ock. Change the t
Football Players Recognized by VIC Coaches
On Wednesday afternoon, the Virginia Independent Conference (VIC) announced their All-Conference team selections.
The Hargrave Tigers fared well as they placed members on the First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention Team as a result of their efforts this season. CJ Farmer '22 led the way for the Tigers, as he earned First Team All-VIC honors both as an offensive lineman and as a defensive lineman. "This is a great honor," remarked Farmer. "I couldn't have done this without the support of my family, teammates and coaching staff. I play football because I love the game but it's definitely nice to see my hard work get recognized!"

Mr. Gilreath encouraged cadets to work and study hard, recognizing the difference that an education at Hargrave can make in the workplace: "Those that put the effort in at Hargrave get ten times back what they put in," he told the cadets. To open and close the service, Cadets Caleb Chester and Gabriel Chester led the Corps of Cadets in worship alongside their father, Lt.Col. Greg Chester, Deputy Commandant.
Santa Swim and other activities at the ODAC
On Saturday November 16, 2019 the Onishi-Davenport Aquatic Center hosted its first Santa Swim. This Community event allowed both members of the public and the cadets of Hargrave the opportunity to meet Santa and to pass on their wish lists! Everyone under 18 years old received a water toy to encourage them to continue having fun in and around the water!
The ODAC has had a renewed impact on the nearby communities of Chatham and Pittsylvania County communities. In addition to opportunities for cadets to learn to swim, train and work as lifeguards on the weekends, and participate in the aquatics fitness and competition program, ODAC is the host of the Chatham Hall swim program, water aerobics classes, Red Cross swim lessons, Masters Swimming, and regional swim and dive meets.
Reggie Walton signs with Mars Hill University
Reggie Walton '20 of Newport News, Virginia signed his National Letter of Intent to attend and play Men's Basketball at Mars Hill University. Located just outside of Asheville, North Carolina, Mars Hill University is an outstanding liberal arts college that competes in the South Atlantic Conference (NCAA Division 2). In the words of Coach Ben Veshi, "I couldn't be more happy for our guy, Reggie. He's a first year student here at Hargrave but you wouldn't be able to tell because he's made such a positive impact on our campus community in the short time he's been here. Reggie is a phenomenal basketball player and an even better young man. Mars Hill is getting someone (in Reggie) that has a relentless passion for the game of basketball and an insatiable thirst for competition. Reggie has made me a better coach and I'm extremely proud that he now has an opportunity to play basketball at the collegiate level while receiving a quality education at Mars Hill!"
On Sunday, November 17, the Hargrave Theatre Club concluded a "One Day One Play" activity with a performance in the Sanford Auditorium. The players were first given the script, read-through, blocked, costumed, and rehearsed on Saturday before retiring to perform the play the next afternoon in front of the Corps and other community members. The play was the on-act comedy Rapunzel Uncut by Mariah Everman. All roles were played by cadets. Notable performances were contributed by Tristyn Gavulic and Gabe Chester as the narrators, Zeb Duffy (Rapunzel's mother), Ethan Paige (the Prince), and Connor Henretta (the off-key Rapunzel herself). The remaining cast and crew members were Andrew Guarino, Charles Moreno, Chris Roe, Davis Talley (well appreciated for jumping in at the last minute), and Matt Bajorek. The backstage crew support were provided by Michael Lewis and Frank Piccione. Mrs. Janice McLaughlin is the club sponsor.
Character Trait Award "Service" and the next monthly trait of "Excellence" introduced.
During chapel on Thursday, November 21st, Cadet Charles Moreno '20 (Cambria Heights, NY) was recognized with the "Excellence in Character" award for exemplifying the character trait of "Service."
Across each of the Pillars, the trait of "Excellence" will be emphasized by advisors, faculty, coaches, and chaplain within the natural course of events. Synonyms include greatness, merit, and distinction.
Lunch and Learns: Tulsa Welding School and Virginia Commonwealth University
Our cadets had the opportunity for two Lunch and Learn's this week heading into the Thanksgiving break.
Dave Williams from Tulsa Welding School (Jacksonville, FL campus) introduced a group of cadets and faculty to the role of manufacturing and the labor trades in our economy as well as the needs and opportunities for the next generation. Tulsa Welding School is the largest welding school in North America.
On Thursday, Mr. Richard Flowers from Virginia Commonwealth University spoke to our cadets about their college searches and the advantages of those located within cities. Often the dynamics and other advantages of the urban campus are misunderstood, VCU is located in Richmond, VA, and widely regarded as a top college in the United States according to Forbes.
2019-2020 Rifle Team Selected
After a rigorious few weeks of physical training (separating the cadets who enjoy playing Call of Duty versus those passionate about rifle), our 2019-2020 is now assembled. Congratulations to all of those who made the cut.
