Parents Weekend Recap

Image

Parents Weekend was an opportunity for us to celebrate the love, dedication, and support provided to our cadets from their parents, guardians, and family members. Family members had an opportunity to meet with teachers, coaches, TACs, and mentors to discuss their cadets.  During the parade, we were able to recognize the character and academic pillars.  Bryce Atkins was recognized for earning the Eagle Scout rank.  Several parents had the opportunity to pin an Honor Roll star on their cadet's dress uniform.

Capstone Events: Crest Ceremony and Parade
"The capstone events of the weekend were the Crest Ceremony held on the Chapel steps and the Parade in Honor of Parents held on Simpson Parade Field. Our new cadets earned their HMA crests, signifying their mastery of the basic skill and knowledge of Hargrave Military Academy. The parade demonstrated the Corps of Cadets' esprit de corps, discipline, teamwork, and hard work. While we have not reached the highest level of performance of which this Corps of Cadets is capable, their parade performance was crisp and disciplined - a fantastic display of growth building from the first days on campus. It was a fitting honor to our families and sponsors who share high expectations and hope for each young man and sacrifice so much for each cadet's success."  -- LtCol Morris, Commandant

Last Game of the Season - JV Soccer
"What a way to end the season. The boys came out determined to leave it all on the field from the get-go.

We decided to be more aggressive than usual and went with a 3-4-3 lineup. Having three strikers paid off. For a good chunk of the first half, we created many opportunities for goal. Unfortunately, we could not find the back of the net. The first half ended 0-1 as New Covenant managed a goal in the last minute of the first half.

With four minutes left in the season, we decided to go for the honor goal with everything we had left. We added an extra man to the midfield and asked the boys to push and pressure. That’s when Nicholas Brown was able to steal a ball and find space to bring it into opposite terrain. Nicholas gave a great pass to  “Zeek” Umali, who dribbled past his defender into the box and shot hard and low. The opposing keeper deflected the shot, which was recovered by O’Connor, who gave a wonderful pass to Roe on the opposite post for the one tap-in.

Goaaaaaaaal !!!!!! What a way to end the season!

Congratulations to the young Tigers - they have come a long way from where they started. Many thanks to all who came to watch and support the team, most specially to all the parents for all your loving support.
God Bless you!" - Coach Zerpa

Chapel Band

Led by Cadet Tristyn Gavulic (lead vocals, guitar; Niceville, FL), the 2019-20 Hargrave Chapel band, Encounter, debuted this week by leading the Corps through two songs during the Thursday service. The current band members are Cadets Jack Benjamin (violin; Chapel Hill, NC), Greg Chester (keyboard, vocals; Chatham, VA), and Caleb Chester (guitar; Chatham, VA). MSgt Selden, our Music Director, accompanied the group on the Cajon box drum.

Flowers for Algernon Escape Room Activity

After completing a short story unit on Flowers for Algernon, the class completed an activity that mirrored the protagonist (literally and symbolically).  The winning team successfully completed an escape room activity in Ms. Paton's classroom in which they had to demonstrate nonlinear thinking, mastery of basic knowledge, and teamwork.
